Chapter 13

Jax

It was lucky that we left for the city the next day because I couldn’t stop thinking about that kiss.

It was good. Really good.

And something about Izzy and I both trying to navigate dating and being single parents bonded us together in a way no other attempt at a relationship ever did.

I didn’t want to talk to Zac about it, but I knew I’d have to tell him. Something, maybe our history, told me he wasn’t going to be a fan. Not because he didn’t like Izzy, I knew he did, but because Zac wanted me to be a mega star and mega stars didn’t date doctors, they dated other mega stars.

“I don’t know how I’m ever supposed to fly commercial again,” Izzy said, rubbing the supple leather of her seat.

We were flying on a private plane that wasn’t mine but that I shared with my parents and a couple other family members. I knew that still made me rich, but not as much as others in my position.

Not that I was complaining.

“You won’t,” Zac said, stuffing his bag under his seat. “This will spoil you rotten for any other kind of travel. Watch out for Rose.”

Rose, who was sitting in her seat next to Cash, was listening intently as he explained to her what was happening on his iPad screen. Despite being different genders and ages, they were already getting along.

“Rose won’t be spoiled by this,” Izzy said, not sounding sure.

“She’s only two,” I pointed out. “She probably won’t even remember.”

“True.” Izzy shrugged.

Izzy and I were sitting next to each other with Cash and Rose right across from us. I’d had their seats turned so they were facing us and it was like we were in our own box of space. Julie and Zac were sitting on opposite sides of the plane from each other. Zac wanted Julie, we all knew it, but she was far too smart to fall for his tactics.

“Mama,” little Rose called. She looked so much like Izzy it was uncanny. “Can I have dwink?”

“I have a drink right here,” Cash said, offering her a water bottle.

“You can hardly drink out of one of those, Cash,” I said. “Rose needs her cup.”

“But thank you for offering,” Izzy added. “That was very sweet.” Izzy pulled a sippy cup out of her bag and handed it to Rose who promptly thanked her.

The four of us altogether was so effortless. Izzy and me, Rose and Cash, there was something so easy about spending the two-hour flight together. Izzy anticipated each kids’ needs and I almost forgot how there was something so unique about moms. Julie was great, I couldn’t have raised Cash without her, but not for the first time, watching Cash excitedly tell Izzy something about his favorite show or a fact he learned at school, did I wish he had a real mom.

Not to confuse my desire for Cash to have a mom with my desire for Izzy in general. That kiss was all I was thinking about, and it took every shred of self-control I had not to kiss her again.
